Ask

Asking from the DNC (Part 2)

The Reality: "John McCain is wrong." Over and over again, Nancy Pelosi had the crowd repeat the mantra that John McCain is wrong.

The Thought As I heard Pelosi's words and listened to the crowd's response, I could help but wonder how anybody could view things as being so black and white. Can it really be said by either party that, "We're right and they're wrong?"

Asking from the DNC (Part 1)

The Reality: As much as the DNC is attempting to make this a green convention, there is an incredible amount of power and fuel being used to make the convention a reality.

The Thought It doesn't matter what you do to try and make things green and environmentally friendly, whenever you have tens of thousands of people from all over the world traveling to one place for a week of pomp and circumstance, it's going to have a wearing effect on the plant ...

The Pastor and the President

The Reality: As my email inbox get's bombarded by requests to affirmatively answer an online survey about keeping, "In God We Trust," on our currency, another poll reveals that Americans don't want the church to meddle in politics.

The Thought: As I continued to read through the article, the point was made that conservative Republicans, who've experienced the greatest shift in views concerning the Church and State, aren't experiencing a philosophical change about Church and State relations...

Got Junk?

The Reality: We all know it, but eBay has now made it official, Americans buy junk they don't want (quite possibly from eBay).

The Thought: The problem of course with all this junk is that we don't know what to do with it once we've got it, outside of putting it back on eBay, sticking it in some storage center, or throwing it away.

Brand Name Colleges

The Reality: There's no doubt that going to college makes a significant impact on your lifetime earning ability, but the a question remains about the value of "name brand" schools over state universities.

The Thought: In my line of work, state school wasn't an option. Both my undergraduate and graduate degrees demanded specific theological training that could only be obtained at a private school.

Drop It To 18

The Reality: Binge drinking has long been a problem on college campuses, but now a collection of university presidents have proposed a solution: lower the drinking age to 18.

The Thought: While I don't have issue with the legal drinking age being 18, I also struggle to believe that changing the number will change attitudes of college students towards drinking.

The Warren Interviews

The Reality: On Saturday, August 16, Rick Warren had the opportunity to interview Barack Obama and John McCain on the role of the presidency in government, leadership, the candidates' worldviews, and America's role internationally.

The Thought: Asking about the place where the Church and State intersect isn't unusual for the fshbwl (see here, here, here, here, and here), and while I personally am always hesitant about blurring the lines between the two ...

The Weight Issue

The Reality: Be it envy over Michael Phelps 12,000 calories a day diet, Emily Yoffe's spandex fantasy, or Argentina declaring obesity a disease, the weight issue is clearly on people's minds.

The Thought: To layout where I'm coming from, I don't struggle with my weight, although, if I'm like my dad, I can only day that for another 74.5 months because, when 40 hits, the metabolism stops. I should also say that there are ...

Save the Males?

The Reality: A few days ago we asked if women wanting to stay at home was bucking feminism, but now, feminist columnist Kathleen Parker has done the unthinkable, she's embarked on a campaign to save masculinity which she claims has been neutered by feminism.

The Thought: In first two chapters of the Bible, God identifies that he creates both men and women in the image of God.

More Social Justice Struggles

The Reality: While Africa has, over the years, received an incredible amount of foreign aid, that very aid that aimed to prevent starvation and other forms of human suffering could be contributing to the problem now because it's generated a culture of dependence.

The Thought: Yesterday we asked about places where the church has had success when getting involved in social issues.
